A Summer Day Hiking Dream

Sun beating down

a hot summer day

longing for cool comfort

along the trail way

Suddenly I hear

while turning  around

a trickling noise

then a roaring sound

Following the path

a cool mist on my face

relief from the heat

I quicken my pace

Allowing my feet to dangle

in the pleasure of the rapid

another world appears

which mystical creatures inhabit

A chameleon appears

changing colors in the rainbow

finding food on a rock

his pace is quite slow

Down a bit further

a fish jumps along the bank

performing acrobatics

his movements are swank

A duck appears

bathing in the mist

diving and shaking his wings

doing the twist

Back to the real world

refreshed from the rapid stream

thankful for the inhabitants

of a summer day dream

Coping with Impossible Situations

Clouds 1

Storms come through

excessive wind and rain

impossible conditions

coming in like a train

Some people are good

ready to lend a helping hand

others are evil

taking advantage of the storm’s band

Impossible situations

difficult decisions to make

critics abound

praying for God’s grace

Finally it happens

a rash of good deeds

showing love and kindness

everyone taking the lead

Prayers are answered

hope is spread

food, clothing, and shelter

God is not dead

Impossible situations

God made us for these

faith, hope, and love

for these we are lead

Impossible situations

healing has begun

restoring communities

one by one

The Living Land

IMG_1045

Blast heard across the land

coming suddenly like the wind

some trees almost made it

the world was in a spin

The land was decimated

such was the power of the fire

now it it is barren

the situation is dire

Arising out of the ashes

there is a tender green leaf

life is reemerging

will it be brief

Winter passes

there is hope in the spring

small animals return

the river forges a new ring

People come

manually clearing the brush

breaths of fresh air

there is no rush

Seasons pass

continued growth in the land

birds are singing

the animals form a band

Suddenly lightening strikes

the forest burns again

still some survive

fire put out by rain and wind

The Earth is alive

renewal in seasons and storms

ever changing

adventure is the norm

Art in the Mist of a Hurricane

IMG_4545

Amidst the ruins

following a hurricane’s fury

lies an esoteric monument

not made in a hurry

Compassion is expressed

for a way of life lost

created out of remnants of wood

knowing the cost

Fury in a storm

communities wiped out

a national tragedy

there is much fallout

Many people flee

having lost all they had

no way to recover

all is sad

A small piece of wood

a monument to what has passed

hope has returned

optimism to last

The communities are rebuilt

the people have returned

prospering now

with lessons learned

Carvings of art

along the highway

may we never forget

those lost on that day

An Autumn Transition

IMG_3213

A misty vapor

comes across the land

the first signs of fall

crickets and frogs lead the band

A wrinkled leaf

floats in the mist

birds migrating south

a flippant song on their lips

Such beauty

as the leaves begin to turn

showing much color

makes the heart yearn

Hearty abundance

covers the landscape

squirrels gather acorns

as the birds escape

Colorful leaves gathered

on a mantle to be admired

others raked into a pile

thrown onto a bonfire

A watery mist

snow begins to fall

steep drops in temperatures

a hibernation call

The days grow cold

there is little light

wrapped up in a blanket

meditating on a peaceful night

fandangos-flash-fiction-challenge-34/A Natural Event

3F05CE09-B54D-4C10-970E-68277D27CF31

The world for humans ended long ago. The volcano erupted causing food and water to go away slow. Time healed the Earth as the sun was allowed back in. Plants and animals in hiding came back thin.

Resources became abundant without the help of man. The old building provided materials and new life for the place. The cisterns were filled water from the rain. Tiny fish began to fill the drain.

Plants grew covering the walls. There were flowers and animals in the hall. New communities formed as the animals claimed their space. Storms reshaped the soil as new rivers began to race.

Walls began to fall as the trees began to grow. Soon there was a waterfall where air vents used to flow. The sun continued to shine where there once was a roof. Life was now abundant where there was only soot.

One day in a small crevice humanity reappeared. A group of nomads came from a place that had disappeared. Seeing the beauty and abundance in this new place, the humans began to build at a rapid pace.

As the years pass the buildings begin to decay. The humans have moved on as is their way. Another catastrophe happens and it all begins again.

Does history continue to repeat itself and does the environment ever win?

A Lizard’s Life

green lizard 6 april 4

Atop the gutters

with a wistful glance

an eye on a prize

almost in a trance

Blending in

the prize moves fast

in a corrupt environment

no hiding place can last

Running quickly

changing colors with each room

getting closer

prize about to meet its doom

A calculated leap

have been spotted now

prize moving fast

letting out a yowl

Not fast enough

acting with haste

my mouth watering

oh! what a delightful taste

Scurrying back

somethings chasing me now

back into the bushes

safely eating my chow

The life of a lizard

living with incredible speed

enjoying the moment

in whatever color it needs

A Morning Walk

Early in the morning

coolness in the air

taking umbrage to mosquitoes

mostly without a care

Remembering the languor

of a day not long ago

exploring the swamp

with my beau

Through the stillness

a story unfolds

of two young lovers

caught in the mist of woe

One wanted excitement

could never stand still

action with every turn

an instant thrill

The other more quiet

dreams of a simple life

serenity around every corner

never any strife

Two young lovers

a decision to make

journey life together

or make a permanent break

The swamp is still

trees reflecting in the sun

a snake swims by

the two lovers run

Running up the stairs

he carries her in his arms

the thrill of being together

her safe without harm

True love prevailed

twenty years of wedded bliss

combination of thrills and serenity

sealed with a passionate kiss

A Peaceful Museum on the Natchez Trace

Sitting on a hill

the old homestead stood

living in eras past

porch has some chopped wood

In days of old

it was the habit of the caretaker

to hand lemonade out to guests

with ice cream from a wood maker

In those early days

explorers crossed the land

seeking a nights lodging

listening to nature’s band

Confusion reigned

in the next centuries years

a great war raged

there were many tears

After the war was over

magnanimous reconciliation occurred

as the culture was rebuilt

different sounds were heard

Coming forward

the house is a museum now

testament to the changes around it

ghosts of the past taking a bow

Sitting along a peaceful road

lessons from the past

one with its surroundings

resting at last

Autumn: Season of Color and Abundance

fall color april 22

September comes

the debut is near

trees and bushes are ready

the signs are clear

Sun rises with high temperatures

jeopardizing the debut

high humidity with no rain

provides a big clue

Will autumn come

or will an error occur

humans and animals shake their head

then with high hopes concur

The show must go on

it happens each year

autumn is coming

there is no need to fear

Bright colorful foliage

emanating from the trees

leaves begin to drop

fulfilling a spiritual need

Abundant food

in each community a feast

acorns for squirrels

for human a roasted beast

Temperatures drop

coolness in the air

celebrations of plenty

many a state fair

Seasons change

 the life cycle continues

the journey is exciting

enjoying each venue
