A Night Hunt

Hidden in the shadows

the hunter stood with a gun

camouflaged in the woods

waiting for a deer on the run

He had left the deer feeder

filled with food

an unfair advantage

increased his good mood

Underneath the moon

a pauciloquent described the site

there was a big buck

silhouetted in the light

The hunter aimed

hoping for a perfect shot

the buck stood still

taking in the lot

Sensing trouble

the buck began to run

the hunter took a shot

a loud noise from the gun

Having missed the target

the buck jumped behind some trees

the hunter running after him

then he fell to his knees

A comeuppance

for the hunter who tried to cheat

he sprained his ankle

trying to free his feet

The hunter went home

without the deer

having nothing to eat

when the daylight was near

The Log

An exciting standoff

each staring at the other

amazing sangfroid in the moment

causing the fear to smother

There was tenderness

each filled with respect

reaching the log together

not knowing what to expect

The stillness of the river

sparkling water in the sun

deciding whether to fight

or to run

The alligator closes his eyes

warmth to much to resist

snoring ensues

excited to exist

The turtle eases off the log

deciding not to stay

instead enjoys the cool water

slowly inching away

Harmony on the water

places where wildlife live

serenity all around

nature continues to give

A Fish Bowl Universe

The assignment was to

find a new universe in the light

hidden from us

but still in plain sight

Filled with dazzling illusions

the beta fish lived in a bowl

there were mountains and valleys

even specks of gold

He swam around exploring

swimming quickly with delight

around fast corners

his gills glittering in the light

A small universe

filled with life

the fish owns the world

there is no strife

Universes exist

in every small thing

all we need to do is look

and enjoy the wonders that they bring

The Cardinal

The cardinal was singing

sitting on the tree branches

a series of events

caused his previous home to be in ashes

A strike of lightening

causing a great fire

destruction with smoke and heat

conditions were dire

Not going far

was normally the heuristic

but he did not want

to become a statistic

Bursting with enthusiasm

and incredible health

he left the forest

in search of wealth

Flying for miles

in an instant he saw the place

filled with trees and berries

so joyful he could hardly wait

In the tree

there is a new nest

comfortable and safe

he takes a brief rest

In the spring

having found a mate

little birds are chirping

life is great

Sitting upon the tree

singing songs of praise

the cardinal is happy

living out his days

A Morning Meditation

There is a gnawing feeling

in my soul

that the sun will not shine

a common story often told

An operation going on

the world continues to change

so many rumors

is the light out of range

Sitting on the edge

picking a rose

it never seems to worry

how the wind blows

Watching the mountain

the sun begins to beam

reassuring and warm

stones in the river sparkle and gleam

A deer walks by

not afraid to be near

the beam surrounds

the sky is so clear

Calmer now

comforted and warm

time to walk home

no longer fearing the storm

A Land River

Walking along the trail

landscape creates an illusion

of a flowing river

creating some confusion

Grass and moss

liquid in the shadows

flowing with precision

combining mountains and meadows

Wildlife abound

in the moss and trees

crickets singing

birds flying in the breeze

Like a dream of

walking on the water

jumping and twirling

molding images like a potter

The sun shifts

the mossy river fades

till the next cycle

the return of the shade

An awesome creation

the wonders of the land

grateful to be a part

something so grand

A Winter Storm

A warning came

as the winds began to blow

snow began falling

sleet adding to the show

On the fringe

was a blast of light

a cable was down

electricity causing a dazzling sight

The snow and wind continue

howling through the trees

causing destruction

everything beginning to freeze

Up on the rooftops

from chimneys comes the smoke

a challenge to stay warm

more wood added to stoke

Fear begins to form

as the dark storm continues

will we be alright

gazing out the window

Finally at first light

a ravishing scene

the storm has left

nature is serene

Another winter day

now the landscape sleeps

resting until spring

when life again begins to peep

Winter brings darkness

we look forward to the light

spring is now one day closer

we have survived the night

A Morning Standoff

The bacon was settling

in my jentacular walk

when I came upon a scene

causing a mob to gawk

He sat silently

eyes shining in the sun

a small dog barking at him

refusing to run

The small dog’s hair stood up

his bark so loud

I started to interfere

but was stopped by the crowd

The alligator inched forward

ready to attack

my eyes widened

as his mouth cracked

Tension mounting

all eyes glued to the scene

could hardly stand it

wanted to scream

Moving closer

the small dog held his ground

then came the kaboom

a surprise to all around

A kaboom

the sound of a firecracker

caused the small dog and alligator

to immediately scatter

I turned around

to the sound of laughter

a young boy

whose small dog the gator was after

Calling the small dog

he announced the game was over

the dog happily followed him

having proved he was not a pushover

Raging Water in Life

The water rages

a mesmerizing site

tossing intimate details of my soul

trying to cause a fright

Every fear

imagined or real

churning it all

telling me how to feel

The water slows

there is raft

a tree reaches for me

begging me to graft

A decision to be made

is this something I can trust

a blanket of security

or something else to make me rust

Suddenly there is calm

a reassuring voice

trust in the Light

and rejoice

Grafted now

the water is calm

the fear is gone

listening to a Psalm

A sprout comes from me

in the darkness there is light

hope abounds

my soul rejoices at the site

A Canyon View

Climbing the slope is awkward

trying not to fall

determined to reach the top

to observe the view with awe

Reaching the top

observing a lineament in the rock

such beautiful colors

like the tail of a peacock

The epitome of grandeur

enough to speak to the heart

so much to take in

perfect art

Taking a breath

the wind begins to blow

whistling through the crevices

adding music to the show

Rain shower begins

dew against the stone

small rocks shimmer

no one is alone

The showers stop

a colorful bright rainbow appears

time to climb down

sunset is near

Feeling calm

ready to sleep

thankful for God’s grace

and for my soul’s peace to keep
