Gesture: A Squirrel’s Adventure

squirrel eating grass in park march

Scattered about

gesturing to all your friends

there is a feast awaiting

bounty has no end

Gathering together

scattering to and fro

coming in from all directions

so many now know

Climbing up the pole

the booty is oh so close

knocking the feeder over

eating till overdose

Looking around

danger lurks

time to flee the scene

human going berserk

Chaos continues

being chased by a broom

friends scattering everywhere

there is barely any room

Safe now

it’s a wrap

nestling with family

time for a nap

The Feeder

squirrel eating grass in park march

Exploring the world

happy as can be

chewing seeds in the grass

packing them in a tree

Eyes wide open

a bird feeder comes into sight

rushing through the field

hoping to eat all of it before night

Inching closer

crawling on the roof

sliding down the wall

hoping not to goof

Seeing no one around

time to seize the prize

inching closer

climbing the pole toward the sky

Seeds are wonderful

his cheeks are full

now leaving the feeder

munching on the last mouthful

Life is good

returning to his nest

eyes are heavy

time for a night’s rest

Proficient: A Squirrel

Moving along

proficient with acrobatic flight

the squirrel jumps in the trees

entertaining all in sight

Time for an adventure

he shouts to his friends

time to search for treats

near the park’s end

There it is

the feeder is in site

each takes a position

ready for the fight

Coming in all directions

there is a battle cry

meeting in the center

the feeder is not high

An unexpected visitor

a hawk appears

taking a dive

he is quite near

Scurrying to the left

another to the right

proficient with speed

moving out of sight

Returning to the park

running and taking heed

safely tucked in nest

without any bird seed

Premature: A Squirrel’s Fun Day

squirrel eating grass in park march

Sliding under the fence

curious as can be

the prize can be seen clearly

near an apple tree

Climbing a tree

everything must be right

looking around

no one in sight

There it stands

filled with luscious treats

must not leap prematurely

the mud is deep

Time to jump

wind giving a hand

leaping to glory

wind chimes sound like a band

On the pole

reaching for the feeder

a luscious seed

out comes a greeter

Running away

having heard a shot

a mouthful of seeds

it deters me not

Sitting on the fence

this is a fun game

gathering seeds all day

victory to proclaim

Explore: The Squirrel

squirrel eating grass in park march

He is a traveler

roaming the woods free

exploring all aspects of life

beginning at a tree

Ears perched high

his tail curled round

seeing a free meal

he runs unbound

First nuts from a tree

his cheeks are full

little teeth grinding

from the nut he pulls

Scampering on

running across the fence

eyeing a bird feeder

his gaze intense

Slowly at first

then to a full open run

he steals some seed

before the sound of a gun

Running rapidly

he escapes in the field

joined by others

with the bird seed yield

Returning to the park

he is in protected land

living in the moment

life is grand

Strategy: The Prized Seed

squirrel eating grass in park march

There it was

in such perfect sight

laying there in the open

been waiting all night

Closer I crept

planning a strategy for days

not a feeble attempt

nothing to get in the way

Over the fence

scampering quietly in the grass

nothing will defeat me

getting the prize at last

No one around

the BB gun is gone

bypassing the slinky

there is a task to be done

Grabbing the feeder

the seed tastes so fine

gathering up a cheek full

all of it is mine

The humans are asleep

dreaming in a quiet slumber

the prize is mine

it is a great number

Over the fence

scampering to the park again

remembering this strategy

today is a win

A Pampering Meditation

Morning meditation

in the park

pampered by beauty

wildlife creating a spark

Comfort with each step

tranquility all around

observing nature

colorful flowers abound

Ducks swimming in the pond

others waddling around

wind softly blowing

a tranquil sound

Autumn is here

colorful leaves are falling

squirrels gathering food

cool weather is calling

Turtle on a log

enjoying the morning sun

grateful to be alive

we are one

A fresh breeze

fall spice in the air

pampering for the senses

a wonderful affair

Meditation ending

my walk is through

continuing the journey

Waiting in Anticipation: A Squirrel Tale

Up a tree jess

Creeping ever so slowing

it came into sight

looking around waiting

for the time to be right

Easing to the right

and then to the left

waiting in anticipation

for the theft

Eyes on it now

nothing in sight

ready to jump

no need for fright

Evasion manuevers

there is a rattle

hiding at the stairs

a bird about to tattle

Bird flies away

time to creep again

now in position

running and jumping to begin

In the air

to the feeder he rose

oh what a lovely prize

out all the seed goes

To the ground

where all the seed falls

the squirrel begins to eat

the winner of it all

Preparation in the Autumn

squirrel eating grass in park march

Meditation in nature

an education from within

enjoying the cool morning

the air is thin

My heart leaps

watching the squirrels prepare

winter is coming

the nest is bare

Nuts and berries

nature has provided a bounty

scurrying to collect them

many squirrels in the county

The leaves are changing

orange, yellow, and red

so much beauty around

the squirrels will be fed

Preparing my soul

for the harvest of the year

reflecting all the blessings

of all that is near

Bountiful food

loving one another

sharing our lives

helping those that suffer

Autumn is coming

there is crispness in the air

my soul is refreshed

the cupboard is no longer bare

A Fishing Tale at Lakeshore Park

boating in the lakeshore park inlet

It is early and the sun is slowly beginning to rise as William and I pack our things for a morning fishing adventure at Lakeshore Park. This park is located on the Ross Barnett Reservoir and is our favorite fishing hole. The fish are spawning this month and we hope to catch some perch.

We arrive at the park and set up the fishing poles and chairs by the bank of the reservoir. There are other people along the bank with their fishing poles and a few in boats not far from us. It is a friendly and optimistic group this morning. There are several people who have caught fish and are using buckets to house the day’s catch.

It is not long before one of our bobbins goes down in the water. I quickly pull on the pole to pull the fish out of the water.  The fish fights as it comes out of the water trying to escape the line but all goes well and out comes a medium size perch. It is a beautiful fish that is admired before being delivered into the bucket. William puts new bait onto the line and the pole is once again in the water.

I decide to explore the park while William watches our fishing poles and lines. There is a group of geese in the park this morning. The wildlife in this park is fun to observe and photograph. The geese are happy to see people in the park because of the food that is given to them. They will deliver quite a show to get free food. This morning someone is feeding them bread while they strut and show their glory.

My observation on the morning stroll is the marina across the bay. The boats are pretty sitting in the docks. People will be in this marina all day taking rides in the boats. I enjoy taking photographs of this area. The people are fun to observe. There is usually an interesting and diverse group sharing stories of the day .

The marina is also home to some of the reservoir water life. Ducks and geese split their time between the marina and park. The reservoir water between these two points provide abundant food and shelter for the birds. The marina is a place where alligators have been spotted as well. There have been some days when alligators will swim between the boats searching for food.

Alligators have become more common in this area through the years. They are mostly harmless unless disturbed. I have lost more than one fishing pole when an occasional alligator has decided he wanted my fish. It is better to let them win the prize than risk life and limb for the fish.

It is time to check on William and the progress of the fishing poles. He has caught two more perch and has decided to try catching fish along the shoreline. Sometimes the fish will come extremely close to bank in the spawning season. I sit down and watch the other fishing poles as he walks down the bank.

There is a snake in the water this morning. He is quite large and colorful flowing through the water. Usually they will pass by people unless disturbed. I sit quietly and let the snake swim by the poles without moving. Snakes are poisonous here and not to be taken lightly.

My bobbin on the fishing pole is going down again in the water. I pull on the line to bring the fish in to shore but pull too hard. The fish gets away and now my line flies through the air and is now stuck in a tree. An entertaining site to see for observers as I try to get the line out of the tree. William returns and saves the day by retrieving the line. The line gets new bait and is returned to the water.

We have some new visitors as a hawk tries to get his lunch in a nearby tree. He is climbing the tree with a squirrel. The squirrel is faster and more efficient in the tree than the hawk. The hawk struggles for a while and then moves on to try for easier game. The squirrel then returns to a safer spot on the ground.

Following this spectacle is a group of geese with their goslings going toward the water. These birds are protective of their young and do not allow anyone near them. They are entertaining to watch as they cross the park to the water. I take a photograph and return to watch the fishing poles.

The morning ends and the temperature has risen. It is now hot on this day and time to return home. William gives our fish to some of the remaining fisherman. We enjoy fishing but do not keep our catch. Most days the fish are either put back into the reservoir or given to people around us.

We pack our things and return to the truck. It has been a peaceful and beautiful outing with nature providing food and recreation. William and I look forward to our return on another day.
