Totem Poles: An Oral History

Many years ago I had the privilege of visiting a collection of totem poles in Sitka Alaska. I marveled at the intricate details and history of these fine works of art.

The climate of Alaska consists of short summers and long harsh winters. The residents of the small communities demonstrate strength and endurance to conquer nature’s elements. The totem pole is a powerful symbol of the lives of people past and present.

Standing tall and elegant the totem pole has representations of a life well lived. The ancestors of the indigenous people shared kindred spirits with the animals and the natural communities surrounding them. Family, remembrance, and thanks are common themes within the totem poles.

Intricate artistry is used to carve the totem poles to tell stories of the culture’s legends and lore. The colors within the totem poles are composed of brown, red, and blue. The Alaskan people were in touch with nature combining animals and mythical figures on the totem poles.

Oral histories are also a part of the totem pole. Families gather together to weave the stories of their ancestry. This is a beautiful ritual to connect the generations.

In a world filled with modern technology, it was a privilege to experience an old fashion form of communication. I appreciate the art of story telling through the generations and hope to visit Alaska again in the future
