Life in the Rubble

On the outskirts of town

there lay such desolation

searching through the rubble

perhaps there is a revelation

Reduced to this state

by a massive fire

a volcanic eruption

the situation was dire

The volcano teased

for many a year

lush landscape seduced the people

bird songs for the ear

Desolate now

ash flows in the wind

destruction is complete

perhaps this is the end

Tears in my eyes

flowing like a waterfall

dropping to the ground

sitting by a wall

Then I saw it

a seedling beginning to emerge

almost picked it up

but resisted the urge

New life

a promise from ancient times

rising from the rubble

beauty instead of grime

Getting up

saying a silent prayer

grateful for this small seedling

that took the dare

Hope restored

cleansed in the morning dew

rebirth has begun

the day is new

  1. Snow drops are pushing their way up through the soggy soil. Spring is on the way perhaps, but it will be hard for them to thrive with all this rain. Lovely piece Debbie.
