Feet in the pool
dog at my feet
relaxing with a book
in this crazy heat
All of the sudden
a small lizard raises its head
dog jumps up to grab it
tossing the lizard till it’s dead
As a thoughtful gesture
there is a dead lizard on my book
dog shaking in pool
I have a horrified look
Falling out of my chair
spilling my drink
water splashing everywhere
unable to think
Trying not to be petty
calming down
putting the present in the trash
as the dog is sniffing around
Back by the pool
finally able to relax
another lizard captures attention
my dog is on attack
Giving up
putting the dog in his pen
relaxing by the pool alone
having regained zen

Our dog Sam’s idea of a wonderful present was a dead chipmunk. the cat preferred mice.
