A Serene Escape

Within the matrix of the city

trying to break free

constant distractions

trying to sedate me

Fleeing the web

an expatriate writer in the making

listening to the stream

homemade bread is baking

A new life

peace in the breeze

wildlife surrounds me

a life of ease

Able to breathe

the words begin to flow

sun streaming through the trees

there is a shadowy glow

Content at last

away from the rat race

spirit is filled with joy

living at a slower pace

Sand Storm

The whirlwind hit me

drawing me into the hole

gateway to another world

beyond my control

Life is disposable

in this strange place

sand swirling around

beating on my face

Seeking shelter

entering into a brick hut

there is peace

in a universe gone nuts

Comfortable

loved and content

an oasis

filled with pleasant scents

Another storm comes

sending me back through the gate

into the this world

it’s getting late

The sun is setting

reflecting beautiful colors in the sand

chaos has turned into peace

in this land

The Stranger

In a time long past

the stranger came

his shibboleth was unique

nobody could understand his name

Thorough questioning ensued

as various family members tried

to understand his mission

looking into those eyes

Finally a breakthough

after using charades

purpose now understood

the family was able to aid

Walking into the barn

retrieving some whiskey

the stranger drank it

and quickly became tipsy

Shaking hands

the stranger went on his way

singing a song

feeling happy this day

The Raindrop

In the circle

a raindrop falls

entering into the earthly realm

a small light to all

Living through the depression

then a world war

an example of resilence

a mentor

The raindrop spreads

making an impact on all

participating in history

determined not to fall

A man walks on the moon

expanding the universe

crisis on this planet

the raindrop continues to traverse

A passing occurs

the raindrop perseveres

faith shaken

grace appears

The incandescent raindrop

returns to the clouds

joining others that are loved

the priviledge of knowing you was ours

The Canvas

Adding the trinket

expelled from the trees

a special box

filled with leaves

Pasted on the canvas

an expression of self

the child was excited

her muse was an elf

Enchanted stories

filled her mind

beauty is everywhere

all life is intertwined

The canvas hangs

in a treasured place

memories of childhood

that can’t be erased

Now an adult

a family appears

the canvas is still special

the muse is still dear

Surrounded by grandchildren

the canvas comes down

stories of innocence told

having found common ground

Telephone Game

Reposing in a tidepool

listening to the sounds

a child stops on a bridge

others quickly gather around

In a line

the telephone game began

giggles abound

as the message ran

I heard the message

as it echoed in the wind

the leaves are colorful

telling the child to send

Whispers continue

going ear to ear

giggles with each message

difficult to hear

Reaching the last child

time to hear what was sent

the message said

the colors are bent

A childhood game

lesson is learned

the more a message is spread

the meaning can get burned

My Epitaph

I am reminded today of how little we know about our ancestor’s lives. Sure ancestry sites can tell us their names and a time period but not about how they lived, loved, or experienced the world around them. There is just some dates separated by a line. What happened during that line? Beyond census records and maybe a newspaper article or name in a Bible what made them tick?

I am going to let these sources tell the basics about me. In an attempt to answer some questions I am going to tell you who I am and how I experience the world around me. Throughout the years there have many experiences good and bad.

Love is where this story will begin. I had been blessed with my soul mate later in life. Our marriage was one of joy and true love. He passed away over two years ago but he still lives just not in this physical world. One thing to remember is that true love never dies. His presence is still here and I look forward to the day when we are reunited and living forever together.

But love has not always been so sweet. My first marriage ended in divorce which was extremely painful. I was married to a sociopath and after years of abuse I finally left the marriage. It was a harrowing experience that would make an excellent horror story.

The next part of this story has to do with faith. I believe in God and His son Jesus Christ. My life has been filled with the Holy Spirit protecting me even in the darkest of times. Opening up to complete trust has been difficult and is a life long journey. There have been and continue to be many questions. One thing that is consistent and always will be is that God never leaves me. He is my protection and hope.

I have often wondered what parts of my ancestors continues through me. One is the ability to write poetry and tell a story. Some of my current extended family have this skill. It seems so personal but I am excited to carry on this tradition. Storytelling is not something that has ever been discussed but my memory is filled with those long gone who had the talent of tell stories that are real and some that are wonderful tall tales. The stories are a testament to how they experienced life.

Remembering all those wonderful people fills me with joy. So much of the family stories are colorful and rich. Living in time periods that were filled with war, depression, and incredible poverty, the courage of these people continues to inspire me. Their stories are now confined to the tombstones with names and dates. This saddens me as I have no one to pass them onto. I often use their stories for inspiration and perhaps that will help some of who they were to live on.

Another portion of my life has been filled with travel. I have been blessed to visit many places in this country as well as abroad. Earth is a beautiful place filled with wonder and adventure. I have fallen in love with nature and all the wildlife that calls her home. The spirit of the land has become a part of me and is another source of inspiration. This spirit also resided in my ancestors as they were farmers and enjoyed watching things grow.

Another part of my story is volunteering. So many blessings have come from serving others. In times of turmoil people gain strength and power working together. This has been a consistent theme throughout the history of my ancestors.

So what is my epitaph? After my ashes are scattered over a memorial coral reef there will be a plague on the wall. When it is cleared by people in the future my life will be summed up as follows:

In service and love

her spirit lives eternally

#love never dies

The Pilgrimage

The journey is long

crossing a cold snow bridge trail

a pilgrimage

to cure all ails

At the top

is a magnanimous soul

radiating solar energy

a cure from days of old

The spirit calls to them

testing their devotion

each struggles to continue

strong in emotion

Growing in faith

an important prep

a cold wind blows

difficulty with each step

Reaching the top

there is a light

a healing pool

reflections are bright

Taking the water

each pilgrim is healed

receiving a blessing

and a protective shield

Going down the mountain

strength to endure life’s hardships

their soul’s are at peace

it was a worthy trip

Redeemed by the Light

Deeper into darkness

exhausted by calumnies

the caves consume me

spirit filled with agony

Will I be redeemed

or is this the end

no one around

now condemned

Suddenly a light

appears from above

slowly pulling me up

a feeling of love

Closer to the top

hope filling me

a new life chosen

now am free

In the water again

helping others to rise

living in truth

defeating the lies

A Depression Era Car

Sitting on display

a tribute to yesterdays cars

a time of hardship

using a creative repertoire

Having only the requirements

to maintain life

in sloping times

surrounded by strife

A community built on courage

never losing hope

using materials around them

learning to cope

Across the land

survival made them strong

bonds throughout a lifetime

family to belong

A century later

their legacy remains

a source of strength

when adversity causes pain
